Dance transforms a symbol, a sign, into a new form, stretching and reshaping it over time. Using its own symbolic language, dance allows us to create a new language – a non-verbal one, rooted in the nature of a body. Following this way, the original symbols are transformed, taking on new surprising meanings through the movement. To create the performance, three dancers, each of very different nature, came together in a single space.

"The “Notes” performance by the ZERO Dance Gallery collective (Konstantin Grouss,
Tatyana Fateeva, Lika Shevchenko) was performed on opening day and on the penultimate day of the No Translations Project. The performances differed from one another in subtle ways. The artists, having created the dance piece, improvise during each performance, yet the interplay of the dance parts is so organic that it seems as though it had been thought out and “fixed” in advance. The choreography of the production reveals a unique stylistic configuration in which elements of classical dance and acrobatics, plastic etudes and pantomime, breakdancing, and the Eastern exercise practice of qigong— which, incidentally, consists of symbolic movements imitating various processes and phenomena—are naturally combined. The musical foundation of the production (music by Pierre Henri and Marco Passarani) is a testament to the artists’ taste and is very much in keeping with the concept of the composition. It features two contrasting sonic spheres: meditative guitar strums that convey a state of introspection, and dynamic movement with a pronounced beat, representing the sphere of active action and external expression. The dancers’ static poses and “flowing” movements give way to a dynamic, rhythmically accentuated dance."
